What is hop water?
Hop water is sparkling water infused with hops, the same cone-shaped flowers that give an IPA its
grapefruit, pine and tropical-fruit aroma, with no alcohol (0.0% ABV), no calories, no sugar and no gluten.
Nothing is fermented: the hops are steeped in water like tea, or dosed in as a natural hop extract, then the water is
carbonated and canned. It tastes like the smell of a craft beer in the body of a seltzer: dry, crisp, lightly bitter.
Some brands build on brewed tea instead of plain water (hop tea, which can carry caffeine), and a few add
adaptogens such as ashwagandha and L-theanine. It is drunk by people cutting back on alcohol, athletes and
parents who still want something that reads as “a beer” at the end of the day, and IPA fans who are simply tired
of seltzer. It differs from non-alcoholic beer in that NA beer is brewed from malt and then de-alcoholized or
arrested at under 0.5% ABV, so it keeps beer body, 25 to 90 calories and barley gluten. Hop water skips the grain
entirely.

GuideHow hop water is made
Every can on this page is some version of “get hop aroma into water without fermenting anything.” There are three
ways to do it, and the method explains most of the taste differences between brands.
1. Dry-hopped sparkling water
Whole hop cones or pellets are steeped in cold or warm water, exactly as a brewer dry-hops a finished IPA, then
the water is filtered and carbonated. Steep time runs from a few hours to a couple of days. This is how
Revolution, Aslan, H2OPS and Hoplark work. It gives the most authentic IPA aroma and a faint green, grassy edge,
and it is the most expensive method because the hops are used once and thrown away. A pinch of citric acid is
usually added to drop the pH, which is what keeps a sugar-free, alcohol-free drink shelf-stable.
2. Hop extract or hop oil
Hop aroma compounds are pulled out of the cone with CO2 or steam distillation and dosed into carbonated water
in tiny amounts. Short's (“natural hop oils”) and Dust Bowl (“all-natural hop extracts”) use this route. The result is
crystal clear, perfectly consistent from batch to batch, and a touch cleaner and more soda-like; it loses some of the
resinous complexity of steeped cones. Large volumes almost always rely on extract.
3. Hop tea
Hoplark's HopTea line, and the iced-tea flavors from HOP WTR and Hazard's, start with brewed tea (black, green,
white, chamomile, hibiscus) and hop it. The tea adds tannin and body, so it drinks less like seltzer and more like an
unsweetened iced tea with an IPA nose. Tea-based cans are the ones that can carry caffeine.
A few brewery versions add yeast after hopping (Lagunitas lists “a pinch of brewer's yeast”). With no sugar to
ferment, the yeast cannot make meaningful alcohol; it is there to transform some hop compounds into fruitier ones, a
trick borrowed from hazy IPA brewing. The cans are still labeled 0.0%.
GuideThe hops, and what they taste like
Hop water is a single-ingredient drink, so the hop variety is the flavor. These are the ones on the cans above.
| Hop | Tastes like | Found in |
| Citra | Grapefruit, lime, passion fruit; the default hop-water hop | Hoplark, Lagunitas, Sierra Nevada, Kentucky, Partake, Hazard's, Surly, Allagash, Pelican, Urban Chestnut |
| Mosaic | Blueberry, mango, pine, a little earthy | Hoplark, HOP WTR × Stone, Partake, Surly |
| Simcoe | Pine, passion fruit, resin; the classic West Coast IPA note | Aslan (Seattle), earlier Hop Splash Citrus |
| Amarillo | Orange, apricot, floral | Sierra Nevada original, Kentucky |
| Centennial | Floral citrus, “super Cascade” | Lagunitas, HOP WTR × Stone |
| Cascade & Chinook | Grapefruit and floral (Cascade); pine and spice (Chinook) | Aslan |
| Sabro | Coconut, tangerine, cedar; unmistakable | Hoplark Sabro, Revolution |
| Nectaron | Pineapple, passion fruit, peach (New Zealand) | Revolution |
| Strata | Passion fruit, strawberry, a dank cannabis-like note (Oregon) | Pelican |
| Crystal | Soft, woody, floral; low bitterness | Allagash, Sierra Nevada Lemon & Lime |
| El Dorado | Pear, watermelon, candy | HOP WTR × Stone |
| Krush | Tropical and citrus; a newer high-aroma variety | Sierra Nevada Peach & Passion Fruit |
| Ekuanot (Equinox) | Lime, papaya, green pepper | Lagunitas |
Rule of thumb: Citra, Mosaic and the New Zealand hops are fruity and easy; Simcoe, Chinook and Cascade are
piney and more “beer”; Sabro and Strata are the acquired tastes.

Pick hop water when you want the beer ritual with none of the beer: zero calories, no bloat, no grain. Pick NA beer
when you want the body and the malt. The two are increasingly sold next to each other, often by the same brewery.
GuideCalories, sugar, caffeine, and who should be careful
Calories and sugar
Water, hops and carbon dioxide contain no calories, so a plain hop water is a true zero, same as seltzer. Watch
for two exceptions: cans with real fruit juice (Sierra Nevada's 2025 fruit flavors list juice concentrate and in some
cases sugar on the panel; Partake Hop Twist has a splash of citrus juice) and hop teas, which are still zero-calorie
but carry tea tannin. None of the brands above use sugar or sweeteners as a flavor base.
Caffeine
Absent unless tea is involved. Hoplark's black, green and white tea flavors run roughly 20 to 70 mg per 16 oz can
(a cup of coffee is about 95 mg). Von Ebert Boost adds 70 mg deliberately. Chamomile and hibiscus teas are
caffeine-free. If a can says “iced tea,” assume caffeine until the label says otherwise.
Who should be careful
- Hops are a mild sedative. Hop extract is a traditional sleep aid, recognized by European herbal regulators
for that use. The dose in a can is small and most people notice nothing, but if you are sensitive to sedating herbs
or take sleep medication, that is worth knowing.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Hops contain 8-prenylnaringenin, one of the most potent plant estrogens known,
and there is no safety data for hop products in pregnancy. The amount in hop water is far below a supplement dose, but
clinicians generally say to ask first. The same applies to adaptogens such as ashwagandha in HOP WTR.
- Hormone-sensitive conditions. For the same phytoestrogen reason, people advised to avoid hop supplements
should treat hop water as the same ingredient in a smaller dose.
- Hops are toxic to dogs. Not the drink (a lick is fine) but the raw hops in the home recipe below. Keep
spent hops out of the compost your dog can reach.
This is general information, not medical advice.
GuideHow to make hop water at home
You need hop pellets from a homebrew shop (about $3 to $4 per ounce for Citra or Mosaic; one ounce makes 7 liters),
filtered water, citric acid or a lime, and a way to carbonate: a SodaStream, or plain seltzer to blend with a
concentrate. No yeast, no sugar, so nothing ferments and the result is genuinely 0.0%.
Cold steep (closest to the commercial cans)
- 4 g of hop pellets per liter of cold filtered water in a sealed jar. (That is roughly 1½ teaspoons of
pellets per liter; a kitchen scale is better.)
- Refrigerate 24 hours; shake once halfway. Longer than 48 hours adds grassiness, not aroma.
- Strain through a fine sieve, then a coffee filter. Pellet sludge is bitter; leave it behind.
- Add ⅛ teaspoon citric acid per liter (or the juice of half a lime). This brightens the hop flavor and
drops the pH so it keeps.
- Carbonate in a SodaStream at full pressure, or make the steep at 8 g per liter and cut it 1:1 with cold
seltzer.
- Drink within 3 to 4 days, refrigerated.
Hot steep (ready in 20 minutes)
- Heat water to 70–75 °C (160–170 °F), well below a boil. Boiling isomerizes the hop acids into harsh
bitterness, which is the one mistake that ruins hop water.
- Steep 2 g of pellets per liter for 10 to 15 minutes, lid on, like tea.
- Strain, chill fast (ice bath), add citric acid, then blend 1:1 with seltzer or carbonate.
Hot steeping pulls more flavor per gram but a touch more bitterness; cold steeping is softer and more aromatic.
Start with Citra alone, then try a 50/50 Citra and Mosaic blend, which is what half the brands on this page are
doing.
GuideWhere to buy hop water, and what it costs
Hop water near me: the fastest route is the non-alcoholic section at Total Wine (it has a dedicated hop water
category online and in store), then the beer cooler at Whole Foods, Sprouts, Kroger, H-E-B, Meijer and Walmart, which
carry Lagunitas, Sierra Nevada, HOP WTR and Hoplark. For the brewery-made cans, use the brewery's own store locator
(Hoplark, HOP WTR, Sierra Nevada, Lagunitas, Pelican, Surly, Revolution, Kentucky and Denver Beer Co. all have one) or
go to the taproom. Amazon stocks HOP WTR, Hoplark, Lagunitas and Sierra Nevada in 12-packs.
| Where | Typical price | Per 12 oz can |
| Grocery 6-pack (Lagunitas, Sierra Nevada) | $9–11 | $1.50–1.85 |
| Total Wine 12-pack (HOP WTR variety) | $21.49 | $1.80 |
| HOP WTR × Stone 6-pack (Total Wine) | $10.99 | $1.85 |
| HOP WTR direct, 12-pack | $29.99 | $2.50 |
| Hoplark direct, 18-pack water / 12-pack tea | $41.99 / $39.99 | $2.33 / $3.33 (16 oz) |
| Kentucky Hop Water 4-pack | $8.49 | $2.12 |
| Hazard's 6-pack, shipped | $19.99 | $3.33 |
| Aslan taproom 6-pack | $7 | $1.17 |
Prices observed October 2026 and will drift; direct-to-consumer prices usually exclude shipping. The cheapest hop
water in America is poured at a brewery taproom; the most expensive is shipped in a box.
Is hop water alcoholic?
No. Hop water is labeled 0.0% ABV. It is carbonated water steeped with hops, and no fermentation takes place, so no alcohol is produced. A few brewery versions add a trace of yeast for aroma and still test under the 0.5% limit that defines non-alcoholic in the US.
Is hop water gluten-free?
Yes, in practice. Hop water contains no barley, wheat or malt, and every brand in this directory describes itself as gluten-free. Hops are not a gluten source. If you have celiac disease, check whether the can was filled on a shared brewery line.
Does hop water taste like beer?
It tastes like the aroma of an IPA without the body: citrus, pine and tropical fruit notes from the hops, a dry finish and a light bitterness, in a drink as thin and crisp as seltzer. There is no malt sweetness, so it does not taste like a full beer.
Can kids drink hop water?
There is nothing age-restricted in a plain hop water, and no retailer cards for it. Hops are a traditional sedative herb and have not been studied in children, and some brands add caffeine or adaptogens, so treat those versions like an energy drink and read the can.
Does hop water have caffeine?
Most hop waters are caffeine-free. The exceptions are hop teas brewed on black, green or white tea, such as three of Hoplark's HopTea flavors (about 20 to 70 mg per can), and functional versions such as Von Ebert Boost, which lists 70 mg. Caffeinated cans in this directory carry a caffeine badge.
Is hop tea the same thing as hop water?
Not quite. Hop tea is brewed tea (black, green, white, chamomile or hibiscus) that is then hopped and carbonated, so it carries tea tannin and sometimes caffeine. Hop water is just water, hops and bubbles. Hoplark sells both, and they sit side by side on the shelf.
Why is hop water so expensive?
A six-pack runs 9 to 15 dollars because hops are expensive (a pound of Citra costs more than a pound of coffee), the dry-hopping and filtering steps are the same ones used for an IPA, and volumes are still small compared with seltzer. Grocery six-packs from Lagunitas and Sierra Nevada are the cheapest way in.
Is hop water good for you?
It is a zero-calorie, zero-sugar alternative to beer, soda and sweet seltzer, which is the real health case. Hops contain polyphenols and bitter acids, but the amount in a can is small and no health benefit has been proven for hop water itself. It is a better swap than a cure.
Can you get drunk on hop water?
No. With 0.0% alcohol there is nothing to get drunk on, no matter how many you drink. Some people feel a mild calming effect, which is the hops, not alcohol.
How many calories are in hop water?
Almost always zero. Water, hops and carbon dioxide have no calories, and the brands that add citric acid or natural flavor stay at 0. The exceptions are versions with real fruit juice, such as Sierra Nevada's fruit flavors and Partake Hop Twist, which may carry a few calories; check the panel.
